The average office worker uses 10,000 sheets of copy paper each year. That equates to 20 reams of paper or 4 boxes per person!
The worst part is that 6,800 of those 10,000 sheets used are wasted! Reasons for the wastage are reported as being errors in printing, printing duplicates, single sided printing and reprinting documents that you have already printed! Paper consumption globally has increased by half since 1980, despite improved efforts with recycling. Each person in the UK consumes the equivalent of 4.48 trees per year, this in not just office paper but cardboard packaging, newspapers, magazines, paper products etc. Studies show that as much as 80% of consumed office paper is completely wasted, with only 7.5% of office paper waste reaching the recycling facility.
The amount of paper waste buried each year in the UK alone would fill 103,448 double decker buses! Every year in the UK, we need a forest the size of Wales to produce the amount of paper we use.
When you take into consideration the costs involved in using paper in the office, machines, toner, maintenance, electricity etc… then producing print outs, scans and copies can be up to 31 x the cost of buying the paper in the first instance!
THERE IS GOOD NEWS
There are companies who have been looking at how they are using paper within their establishments and we have found three interesting studies which resulted in massive changes.
Citigroup, a large financial services company, determined that if each employee used double-sided copying to conserve just one sheet of paper each week, the firm would save $700,000 each year.
Bank of America cut its paper consumption by 25% in two years by increasing the use of online forms and reports, e-mail, double-sided copying, and lighter-weight paper. Environmentally using 25% less paper each year is significant, financially I’m sure there were savings made too.
